My Daughter Thanked My Mother For Basically Raising Her—Then Grandma Refused To Take The Credit

PART 2

I followed my mother home anyway.

She lived twelve minutes from the restaurant in the same brick ranch where I had grown up. The kitchen still had the brown cabinets she had threatened to paint white since 2009.

Ruth put the cake stand in the sink.

“Coffee?” she asked.

“No.”

“You always want coffee.”

“I want to know why Leah thinks you raised her.”

Ruth turned around.

“Then ask Leah.”

“I am asking whether you ever encouraged it.”

“No.”

“Not even as a joke?”

“Sandy, I told that child for years that her mother worked hard and loved her. I also told you for years that children do not experience payroll.”

I stared at her.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means eight-year-old Leah did not care why you picked up the Thursday shift. She cared that you were not at the science night.”

“I was at the next one.”

Ruth sighed.

There I was doing it already.

One for one. Absence against attendance. Thursday against the following month.

My phone rang before I could say anything else.

Leah.

I answered on the back step.

“Mom, are you mad?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I figured.”

“You told a room full of people Grandma raised you.”

“I said basically.”

“That is doing a lot of work in that sentence.”

She exhaled. “I was thanking her.”

“You can thank her without turning me into a woman who stopped by on Sundays.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You said I was always at the bakery.”

“You were at the bakery a lot.”

“I also raised you.”

“I know you did.”

“Do you?”

There was a longer pause this time.

When Leah spoke again, her voice had lost the defensive brightness from brunch.

“Mom, Grandma didn’t put this in my head.”

I looked through the screen door at Ruth. She was slicing leftover cake as if she had not spent the afternoon being accused of stealing motherhood.

“Then where did it come from?” I asked.

Leah answered quietly.

“I remember who was there.”
