She carried her canvas duffel to the staff building and found Ethan sitting on the porch steps outside her room.

For a second she simply stared.

He stood.

“I canceled the reservation.”

“I assumed.”

“I was angry.”

“I assumed that too.”

“I drove home for about forty minutes.”

Marissa waited.

“Then I realized I did not actually want to spend our anniversary proving a point in an empty house.”

“I brought sandwiches.”

She laughed once, tired enough that it almost became a cry.

“Very glamorous.”

“Better.”

They sat on the steps.

Ethan looked toward the lake through the trees.

“So do I.”

“I still wish you had left early.”

“I know.”

“And I also know I kept acting like your commitment became optional when I wanted something badly enough.”

Marissa looked at him.

He rubbed his palms together.

“I do not like that about myself.”

“I do not like that I spent years teaching everybody it was safe to expect.”

He glanced over.

“That sounds like we both get homework.”

“Unfortunately.”

They ate sandwiches on the staff-building steps while music from the festival drifted across the lake.

It was not the anniversary either had planned.

It was also not ruined.
